Israel Derangement Syndrome

Okay, let's get a few things straight before I make some controversial remarks. I think of the deaths of the activists on board the Turkish aid ship as a tragedy, and I believe that Israel had other options besides deadly force.

But there are some things wrong with the hypothetical scenario. The use of the Kurds is interesting, because there are Kurdish groups that are recognized by the State Department as terrorist groups, and they have killed innocent civilians. It should have been mentioned that the American citizen in question had dual citizenship.

It is true that the Israelis boarded the ship in international waters. But under maritime law, a country in a state of hostilities is allowed to declare a "distant" blockade. This permits them to stop and board ships headed for the blockaded area, even on the high seas. Both Hamas and Israel are quite open about the fact that a state of hostilities exists. The aid ships are defying orders to heave to, which does in fact permit the Israelis to forcibly board them.

Very importantly, the Hamas rule of the Gaza Strip is not, repeat not, an elected government. Hamas won a majority of seats in the last election, which would have permitted them to eventually install their own government over both the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. BUT -- they didn't. Instead the y staged an armed coup in the Gaza Strip, and are now openly ruling by the gun. There is a simple word for this: treason. And if you don't believe me, feel free to ask a member of the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank.
